Arsenal’s pre-season schedule as Gunners head to USA

It may have taken time for Arsenal supporters to fully overcome the disappointment at the end of last season. But it feels like the transition process started in earnest this week.

The signing of the talented Fabio Vieira from Porto has been confirmed, while the club’s sporting director Edu has given an interview suggesting further acquisitions are in the works at the Emirates Stadium.

Higuain on Arsenal interest

Gonzalo Higuain was a frequently asked player to move to Arsenal in his early years.

The Argentina international was a prolific goalscorer at Real Madrid, Napoli and Juventus, with Premier League links emerging frequently. Although he eventually got a loan move to Chelsea, it was the Gunners who looked most likely to sign him for a long time.

The man himself has confirmed a move to north London is close to materializing ahead of Napoli’s arrival.

“I remember I was about to go to Arsenal when I went to Napoli, but they said I was too expensive,” he said. “And a few days later they paid 80 million euros for [Mesut] Ozil!”

Merson sends transfer warning

Former Arsenal striker Paul Merson believes bringing in Gabriel Jesus would show the club are “serious” about being competitive in the top four again this season.

Following the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, Mikel Arteta is running out of proven options at the point of attack. That’s why links with the Manchester City and Brazil striker apparently make sense for the Gunners.

Merson thinks Arsenal should go all out to bring Jesus to North London.

“Arsenal need to get Gabriel Jesus if they really want to get back into the top four,” he said. “They have to catch him. It’s as simple as that.

“Everything goes out the window if they don’t. It doesn’t matter what else they do. All they have right now up front is Eddie Nketiah. And no disrespect , Nketiah won’t get you into the top four. Absolutely no chance. That’s a fact.”

Marseille boosted Saliba

Marseille have received a possible boost in their attempts to sign William Saliba on a permanent deal with Arsenal.

The French centre-back spent last season on loan with the Ligue 1 side and enjoyed arguably the most consistent campaign of his young career. His performances have sparked speculation over a transfer approach from Marseille as a result, although the Gunners are expected to use Saliba as part of their first-team squad.

Marseille may however have the resources to test Arsenal’s resolve, with reports in France suggesting the club will be “ambitious without spending too much” in the transfer market. This is after owner Frank McCourt responded to DNCG concerns by offering guarantees.

Last season, the club was temporarily suspended from signing new players due to issues with their financial situation.
