Nottingham Forest have agreed to sign Burnley goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey on a free transfer this summer.

The 35-year-old Wales international will compete with Dean Henderson who was loaned out by Manchester United earlier this month.

Forest needed to be reinforced in this department after Brice Samba indicated that he would not sign a new contract and left to join Lens.

Samba announced his intention to leave Forest last month, before the club offered him a deal which did not meet the demands of Congolese stoppers.

The suggestions are that Samba did not believe the offered contract reflected his importance to the team, or what he had achieved in three years with the team.

Consequently, Nottingham Forest have decided to sign Hennessey – who was limited to just two appearances at Turf Moor last season.

Hennessey played second fiddle to Nick Pope in the 2021-22 season and was considered surplus to requirements despite the England keeper’s departure.

Pope spent six years at Turf Moor and established himself as a much-loved shot-stopper in the Premier League, but he always looked likely to move on after the Clarets were relegated last season.

Consequently, he completed a £12m move to Newcastle United – signing a four-year deal with the Premier League outfit.

As a result, Nottingham Forest manager Vincent Kompany will be looking to sign a new No.1 shotscorer ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

One of Kompany’s main targets is Manchester City’s Kosovo goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

The Burnley manager has started talks with Muric – who spent last season on loan in Turkey with Adana Demirspor.

Muric could be interested in the move given he has only made four appearances for City despite joining the club in 2015.

Muric, however, enjoyed successful loan spells at Nottingham Forest, Girona FC, Willem II Tilburg and NAC Brada.
